One of the grounds for initiating criminal prosecution against Mikayel Ajapahyan was his public call to seize power made on+ June 21, 2025

28/06/2025

The ground for the decision made on June 26, 2025, to initiate public criminal prosecution against Mikayel (Gevorg) Artashes Ajapahyan was his public calls for the seizure of power during interviews given to representatives of mass media on June 21, 2025, during which he reaffirmed statements he had made in an interview on February 3, 2024, regarding the necessity of carrying out a coup and seizing power through means not prescribed by the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia — with the support of high-ranking military officials, as well as presented the change of power in Armenia by force structures as a necessity.

The aforementioned indicates that the calls made by Mikayel (Gevorg) Ajapahyan are not emotional or neglegent expressions, but a conscious action that took place continuously, consistently, using mass media, information and communication technologies. These statements appear in a new light in the context of the disclosure of preparations for the alleged seizure of power and the commission of terrorism by the movement called “Sacred Struggle”, in relation to which the law enforcement agencies of the Republic of Armenia had been conducting long-term operational-investigative measures. After the initiation of public criminal prosecution against active members of the said group, within this context, Mikayel (Gevorg) Artashes Ajapahyan once again, on June 21, 2025, made public calls for the seizure of power, violent overthrow of the constitutional order, and unlawful seizure of the powers of the executive authority of the Republic of Armenia, through means not provided for by the Constitution.

The two aforementioned statements became accessible to the audience on the online platform “youtube.com” and have been viewed more than 40,000 times.

In particular, during an interview given to “Gala TV” and published on various news websites and social media platforms on February 3, 2024, Mikayel (Gevorg) Ajapahyan stated: “Now that's it, the respect towards me is like this, who listens to me now, if there were anyone listening to me, the revolution would have happened long ago. I know only three ways to change the authorities. If you know a fourth one, tell me. The first is elections — supposedly, or, so-called elections. The second — a coup. The third — a popular uprising. Is there any other? Is there? No, there isn’t. All three are impossible. Subjectively — impossible. Objectively — maybe possible.”

He further added: “So, doesn’t it become clear from my past six years of activity — just the past six years — what I’ve been saying? How many times have I openly stated: a military coup is required. I said this even during the war. I told it to the presidents — to Kocharyan and Serzh. I said, 'Mr. President Kocharyan, you were president for ten years, before that you were Prime Minister for a year or two, and also the President of Artsakh for years — don't you have any generals who support you, who share your ideology, neither in the army, nor in the police, nor in national security, who would come and stand by your side and carry out a coup?'” “Serzh, you have been President, Prime Minister, Minister of Defense, Minister of Internal Affairs, Minister of National Security, Secretary of National Security for more than ten years, is there any other position you haven't held, oh yes — President of the Chess Federation? Don't you have a single general devoted to you, neither in the Police, nor in the National Security, nor in the army? Why were you in the streets with the slogan "I have honor"? What was real politician talking about, doesn’t the real politician know that it is not possible to change this through elections? Where did you go to the elections, where did you enter the elections? It means that your goal is not to change. Who better than you may know that election will not change anything..."

Then, in an interview published on June 21, 2025 on the “News.am” news website, Mikayel (Gevorg) Ajapahyan, in response to a journalist’s question, noted: “I am right, I have never called for power seizure, I have called for a coup, it is not a call for occupation, I have called for a coup, I have told the military forces to save this country, save it from this madman, they are not saving it, they are equally guilty of all this. I have not called for the seizure of power, I have said that it is necessary to do it. That is not a call, it is necessary to do it. It is necessary now, it is belated, however it is still necessary to do it, that’s all, but if the security forces are simply feeding their families, and they are not thinking about this country or this Republic, not thinking about this people, they are just feeding their families, let them continue just feed their families…”
