Today, Anna Vardapetyan, Prosecutor General of the Republic of Armenia met 40 students of the Faculty of Law of the Yerevan State University in the scope of "Uniting Forces to Prevent Corruption" national campaign.
In the scope of the abovementioned campaign, the Ministry of Justice organized an “Anti-corruption awareness week” in cooperation with the USAID, which launched on December 3, 2024.
During the discussion with the students in question and answer format, Anna Vardapetyan addressed the following issues related to corruption—what makes corruption dangerous, how does it manifest, what is favoritism, how to fight against favoritism, what is integrity and how to whistle-blow about corruption crimes.
Students conveyed the idea, that corruption deprives people of equal opportunities, hinders the development of the state, creates a state within a state, endangers national security, etc.
Referring to the challenges in the field of corruption prevention, the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Armenia highlighted that the change of mindset is necessary and mentioned, “We have one problem, we want justice, but only if it doesn’t turn against us”.
During the meeting RA Prosecutor General answered students’ questions. She also referred to the work implemented in the direction of development of prosecutors’ public communication skills, the necessity of increase of public trust in law enforcement authorities, protection of state and community interests, as well as the work carried out by the Prosecutor’s Office in the field of confiscation of property of illicit origin.
Edgar Arsenyan, Head of the Department of Supervision over Legality of Pre-trial Proceedings in the RA Anti-Corruption Committee represented the statistics of criminal proceedings initiated in the RA Anti-Corruption Committee, cases submitted to the court, judgments and damages recovered from January 1 until October 30, 2024.
Edgar Arsenyan mentioned that 131 criminal cases regarding 287 individuals were submitted to the court during the mentioned period. AMD 532 million 568 thousand was recovered in the scope of completed cases. 91 corruption related criminal cases regarding 146 individuals were completed in the courts during January 1 until October 30, 2024. Criminal judgments of conviction were rendered against 140 individuals in the scope of abovementioned 88 criminal cases, judgments of acquittal were rendered against 6 individuals in the scope of 3 cases (judgments were appealed).
