On August 14, 2025, the Prosecutor General’s Office informed that Prosecutor General of the Republic of Armenia Anna Vardapetyan had revoked the January 30, 2020 decision on termination of criminal prosecution against former Deputy Chief of Police Sasha Afyan. Public criminal prosecution was subsequently initiated against Sasha Afyan, and on January 9, 2026, the files of the criminal proceedings, along with the approved indictment, were submitted to the court. The main trial hearings are currently underway.
Within the framework of the criminal case against Sasha Afyan, on April 27, 2026, the prosecutor filed a motion requesting that the son of Mushegh Saghatelyan also be recognized as a victim (under the terminology of the former Criminal Procedure Code, as the legal successor of a deceased victim). Mushegh Saghatelyan had been subjected to torture by police officers in central Yerevan and subsequently at a police station during the March 1 events. Despite this, he was unlawfully convicted by a judgment issued on October 23, 2008, for allegedly using violence against police officers. He was later acquitted.
The court granted the prosecutor’s motion and Mushegh Saghatelyan’s son has been recognized as a victim in the criminal case against Sasha Afyan.
