The Prosecutor General of the Republic of Armenia Anna Vardapetyan received Tomoko Akane, the President of the International Criminal Court, who visited Armenia for the first time

On May 5, 2026 Prosecutor General of the Republic of Armenia Anna Vardapetyan received Tomoko Akane, the President of the International Criminal Court.

 

The meeting was also attended by Victor Biyagov, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Armenia to the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Hirad Abtahi, the Head of the Office of the International Criminal Court and others.

 

Anna Vardapetyan welcomed the President of the International Criminal Court to the RA Prosecutor General’s Office and emphasized that this is the first time that the acting President of the International Criminal Court has visited Armenia, which shows the commitment to developing and deepening cooperation between the Republic of Armenia and the Court.

 

It should be recalled that Armenia has become a member of the International Criminal Court since February 1, 2024, the 124th State Party to the Rome Statute, the 19th State from the Eastern European Group.

 

During the meeting, the parties attached importance to development of bilateral cooperation and strengthening institutional partnership, especially in the context of developing the capacities of prosecutors in the field of investigating international crimes. a Number of issues related to the collection of evidence in criminal proceedings, the protection of victims and witnesses were also discussed among other things.

 

Anna Vardapetyan expressed interest in implementing joint training programs with the International Criminal Court, expanding technical cooperation and developing mechanisms for the exchange of experience. The importance of a victim-centered approach in criminal proceedings was underlined.

 

Anna Vardapetyan and Tomoko Akane reaffirmed their willingness to develop effective and transparent cooperation mechanisms, as well as to continue the constructive dialogue.
